Portobello Business Centre Post Brexit Statement

Is it now over a month since the country voted in favour of “Brexit”
Although we are now experiencing a period of uncertainty and change the immediate “day to day” work of Portobello Business Centre continues unaffected by the June 23rd vote.
We are currently not working with or delivering any projects funded by the European Union.  Whilst PBC has previously participated in a number of EU funded projects, there are no historic implications for our funded work.
In this respect, there is no immediate impact on PBC’s budget or staffing.
The availability and impact of future European Union funded projects during the period leading up to and beyond the triggering of Article 50 remains unclear.  This may have implications to future service provision.  We will continue to monitor this position.
Like many organisations Portobello Business Centre has noted the variations in London’s commercial property market and the impact Brexit has had on exchange rates. This situation is changing on a day by day basis and is again being closely monitored. There is no impact from this on how we conduct our business.
Portobello Business Centre Clients
All change brings challenges and also offers opportunities. Clients with strong business connections within the EU will clearly be concerned about recent developments. They will also be thinking about opportunities to deliver goods and services into new markets.
PBC Business Advisers are on hand to discuss and offer expertise.
Some clients may find that the reduced value of the pound provides new and exciting opportunities for exporting and a broadening basis for trade,.
The availability of loan funds for new enterprises may be of particular interest to local start up business in the near future.
Our Business Advisers are happy to assist and offer support through this process.
For PBC itself, though it is Business as Usual, we are actively seeking opportunities to develop our training and consultancy portfolios to work in partnerships and consortiums following new and innovative approaches. Like all our clients, we are always looking to take advantage of opportunities as they arise.

One in 4

The “ONE” in 4 is new project being piloted by Portobello Business Centre working in partnership with The Rotary Club of Paddington.  In recent years there has been significant growth, not only in the numbers of new businesses starting to trade but also in the number of people who want to set up a business with a social purpose.  Both PBC and Rotary are keen supporters of business that have a strong sense of Social Responsibility and we go out of our way to encourage all business to put something back into their community. So when we came across recent statistics that showed that 1 in 4 of all new businesses starting have a social conscious too we decided we ought to do something to pitch in some resources to help them set up, survive and grow.

So the idea for The “ONE” in 4 programme was born.  The “ONE” in 4 project will look to encourage, select, support and in part fund new business start ups with a social purpose, by providing advice guidance, training and development support.  We are effectively enabling local businesses to  put something back into the their local community.  For more details click here

Crowdfunding – Understanding how to Raise Finance and test ideas using the Crowd

Companies are traditionally funded through equity, debt and occasionally through grants. Crowd funding is an alternative form of funding that is growing in popularity as it becomes more widely understood.

Robert Foster will explore the pros and cons of crowd funding, how it works, and what is it best suited to. Case studies and examples, both successful and unsuccessful, are used throughout this interactive introductory workshop.

Background: Robert spent several years in the commercial sector working for big and small companies, local outfits and multi-nationals. He set up and ran his own commercial organisation and then decided there must be more to life and business than “this”.
Now Robert enjoys being nosey and opinionated in the social sector. Being able to get to know people, organisations and problems and then helping to sort things out keeps him young.

He advises and consults with local authorities, infrastructure bodies, and third sector and social enterprises to help them achieve their aims.
