A New Prime Minister. What Could It Mean for Small Businesses?

For many small business owners, the past few years have felt like a constant balancing act.

One month you're dealing with rising costs. The next you're trying to attract new customers, recruit staff or make difficult decisions about where to invest your time and money. Just when things begin to settle, something else changes.

So, when a new Prime Minister takes office, it's understandable that many business owners start asking the same question:

"What could this mean for my business?"

This week, Andy Burnham became the UK's new Prime Minister, outlining ambitions to support economic growth, reform business rates, invest in entrepreneurs and skills, and bring more decision-making closer to local communities. While many of these proposals are still at an early stage, they suggest that supporting businesses could become a key part of the Government's agenda.

For some businesses, that could mean new opportunities in the future. Potential changes to business rates, investment in local economies and greater support for entrepreneurs may help create a more favourable environment for growth. However, as with any new Government, the full picture will only become clearer as policies are announced and implemented.

While it's important to keep an eye on national developments, we've learnt something through supporting thousands of businesses over the last 30 years. The businesses that make progress aren't always the ones waiting for the next announcement. They're often the ones asking questions, adapting to change and looking for opportunities they can act on today. That's where business support can make a real difference.

At Portobello Business Centre CIC, we speak to entrepreneurs every day who are facing many of the same challenges. Sometimes they're worried about rising costs. Sometimes they're unsure how to attract more customers. Other times they simply need someone to help them step back, look at the bigger picture and work through the options available.

We don't have all the answers, and every business is different. But what we do know is that one conversation can often uncover opportunities that hadn't been considered before. Whether that's identifying funding opportunities, improving marketing, reviewing pricing, reducing unnecessary costs or developing a clearer strategy for growth, small changes can often have a significant impact.

As more details emerge about the new Government's plans, we'll continue sharing updates that matter to entrepreneurs and, more importantly, what they could mean for your business.

Whatever changes lie ahead, one thing remains the same: you don't have to navigate them alone.
