New Funding, Low Confidence: What Does It Mean for Small Businesses?

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has published new research showing that growth confidence among UK small businesses has fallen to its lowest level since the survey began in 2014. Rising operating costs, taxation and wider economic uncertainty continue to weigh heavily on many business owners.
What's particularly interesting is that this comes at a time when we're also seeing new opportunities emerge. Over the past week, the British Business Bank has announced an expansion of the Growth Guarantee Scheme and welcomed additional accredited delivery partners, with the aim of making more finance available to smaller businesses.
It paints an interesting picture. While access to finance and business support is expanding, many small businesses are still feeling cautious about the future. It suggests that creating opportunities is only part of the challenge—building confidence is just as important.
At Portobello Business Centre, we see this first-hand. Many businesses still have ambitious plans to grow, but they're understandably taking more measured decisions about investment and expansion in the current climate. That's why practical advice, trusted support and access to the right opportunities remain so valuable.
We'll continue sharing updates that matter to our business community, helping you stay informed about both the challenges and the opportunities shaping the UK's small business landscape.
