From Vanity Metrics to Meaningful KPIs: A Practical Business Data Workshop

For many small businesses, data can feel overwhelming.Dashboards, metrics and reports often sound useful in theory, but hard to apply in practice.

That is why Workshop 2 of our Digital Series, focused on Business, Marketing & Finance Data Made Easy, was such an important moment in the programme.

Following the strong turnout for Workshop 1, this second session once again demonstrated the appetite among East Sussex businesses for practical, accessible digital support that helps them make better decisions without adding complexity.

Continuing the momentum across East Sussex

The workshop took place in Eastbourne and was delivered by Suman Randhawa, working in collaboration with Portobello Business Centre and in partnership with East Sussex Growth Hub.

Bringing together business owners from across the county, the session created a supportive space to ask questions, share experiences and rethink how data is used day to day.

As one attendee shared:

“This has been so useful and I’m really glad I took the first step and came along today.”

Taking the fear out of business data

Rather than focusing on technical detail or jargon, the session centred on why data matters and how it can genuinely support business growth.

Key themes included:

  • Understanding how data supports better decision-making

  • The difference between vanity metrics and meaningful KPIs

  • How marketing, finance and customer data work together

  • Using the right data, rather than more data

For many attendees, this reframing helped remove the pressure to track everything and instead focus on what is actually useful for their business goals.

Practical learning, not information overload

True to the spirit of the Digital Series, the workshop focused on practical application. Attendees were encouraged to think about:

  • Which numbers they already have access to

  • What they actually need to know to move their business forward

  • How small changes in tracking and reporting can save time and reduce uncertainty

By grounding data in real business scenarios, the session helped make something that often feels abstract far more relatable and actionable.

Part of a wider programme of support

This workshop forms part of a six-part, fully funded Digital Series designed to equip East Sussex entrepreneurs with tools they can implement immediately.

Each session builds on the last, supporting businesses to develop confidence gradually rather than all at once. The aim is not to overwhelm, but to empower.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making Workshop 2 such a success, and to all partners involved in delivering the programme.
