Want More Customers? Make Sure You’re Easy to Find Online

Not long ago, searching online simply meant typing a word into Google and clicking the top results. Businesses worked hard to appear on that first page - this is what we know as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

SEO is really just about making sure people can find your website. Think of it like making sure your shop is on a busy high street rather than hidden down a back alley.

Is finding your business online like finding a needle in a haystack?
Is finding your business online like finding a needle in a haystack?

You do this by:

  • Using the right words on your website (the same ones your customers type into Google)

  • Keeping your site fresh and up-to-date

  • Making sure Google understands what each page is about

But search is changing. Younger generations are using TikTok and AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity to find information, products or services. That means your online presence needs to work not only for people and Google, but also for these new tools that ‘summarise’ the internet.

So, what can small businesses actually do about it? Here are a few easy steps:

1.     Claim and update your Google Business Profile

This is the free listing that shows up on Google Maps and when people search for your business name. Keep it updated with your details, opening hours, photos and most importantly, encourage happy customers to leave reviews.

2.     Know what your customers are searching for

Think about the exact words your customers would type into Google to find your product or service. Tools can help with this, but often just talking to your customers gives you the best clues.

3.     Use those words in the right places

Add them to your page titles (the clickable blue text in Google), your short page descriptions and your main website content.

4.     Write content that answers questions

Customers often search in the form of a question: “How do I fix…?” or “Where can I buy…?” If your website answers these questions clearly, you’ll be more likely to show up. Think of your website as a set of FAQs.

5.     Don’t try to do it all at once

SEO can feel overwhelming, but it’s better to take small, regular steps. Spend a little time each week improving your website, updating your Google Business Profile or writing one useful article.

6.     Use free or low-cost tools to see what’s working

All-in-one website platforms such as Shopify, Wix and Squarespace all provide you with simple tools to track how you are doing online.

We then have Google Analytics (GA4) which when embedded within your website gives you large amounts of useful information around keywords and website visibility.

Your Google Search Profile will also provide you with a useful amount of data to track searches and keywords.

Or you may want to try AskThePublic which shows the exact questions people are typing into search engines about your product or service.

Alternatively, why not book in a session with one of our expert advisers. We can go through your website with you, point out where you can make simple changes and even act as your monthly website 'mentor' to ensure your site stays on track.
