What's really stopping people from starting a business in the UK?
Is it access to finance? A lack of confidence? Not knowing where to turn for advice?
These are some of the questions MPs are looking to answer through a new parliamentary inquiry into entrepreneurship and business creation.
The inquiry will explore the challenges people face when starting and growing a business, from accessing funding and developing skills to finding practical support.
At Portobello Business Centre, we work with aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners at different stages of their journey.
We know that having a good business idea is only one part of the challenge. Turning that idea into something sustainable often requires guidance, confidence and the right connections.
It's encouraging to see these issues being explored at a national level, particularly the experiences of everyday entrepreneurs, sole traders and people who may face additional barriers to getting started.
Importantly, the Committee is inviting entrepreneurs to share their experiences, helping ensure that those directly affected have a voice in the discussion.
The deadline for written evidence is 12 November 2026.
What do you think is the biggest barrier to starting a business today?
